What can I do to keep my PC and login information secure?

This section includes some basic guidelines plus the log on and log off checks you need to make each time you use our Online service.

Making Online usage more secure

There are a number of things you need to do to ensure that no one can access your account.

You should try to incorporate these into your online habits - just as you would always ensure that you don't leave credit card slips lying around.

Basic checks

•

Keep your membership login name and password separate. You should try and memorise your login name and password.

•

Check your account regularly. If you spot a change to your personal or application information that you don't remember making - note down the exact details and report the incident to us immediately.

Checks when using a computer that you share or use at work or in a public place

•

Never leave your computer unattended while logged on. Always remember to shut down your Online service and web browser, and clear the cache - as your PC may store information. See the instructions below to find out how to do this.

•

Don't leave printouts lying around or in wastepaper basket. If you do not need a printout, you should shred it or discard it in private. You should also always ensure that you collect account printouts from public or shared printers.

•

Always log on and off properly. When using a PC particularly at work or in a public place, you should always ensure you follow the log on/off checks below.

Log on checks

•

Check for monitoring equipment. If you are using a PC in a public place, make sure that the equipment you are using does not allow electronic eavesdropping or recording of your activities (at work, check with your systems administrator or if it is a PC in a public place such as a cyber cafe a library ask a member of staff) as your online account password and details may be seen or recorded.

•

Check that no one else can see your PC. Be aware of your surroundings when you are online - ensure that you are not being watched by someone or filmed on close circuit television.

Log off checks

•

Always log off. You should always ensure that you click on the "log off" button when you have finished your online service.

•

Clear your cache. We recommend that you always clear the cache of you r web browser when you log off. This way, you will be able to prevent others from accessing your personal information by calling up the last page you visited. See the Instructions below to find out how to do this.

•

Close down your browser. When you have cleared your cache and history, close down the web browser itself by selecting "File" and then "Close" on your menu bar.
